Description

Begin your day with a drive from Shangri-La town to Pudacuo National Park. As you ascend, feel the air getting crisper and see the landscape transform into a Tibetan paradise. Explore the park, which is well-developed with wooden boardwalks and eco-friendly shuttle buses that transport you between the key sites, minimizing environmental impact. Stop at Shudu Lake, a serene, mirror-like lake. Walk the 3.3-kilometer wooden plank trail that skirts the lake's edge. The walk is gentle and offers stunning views of the lake reflecting the surrounding forests and mountains. Keep an eye out for grazing yaks and the rare 'drunk fish' that rise to the surface in spring. Next, take the shuttle bus to the trailhead for Bita Lake, the largest lake in the park. The walk here is a bit longer but incredibly rewarding, taking you through primeval forests, across wetlands, and along the lakeshore. The phrase 'Bita Sea in May' is famous for the stunning sight of azalea petals falling into the lake, which is said to mildly intoxicate the fish. Stop at Militang Grassland, a viewpoint offering a breathtaking panoramic view of a vast, lush alpine meadow nestled between mountains—a classic Tibetan plateau landscape. After lunch, drive back towards Shangri-La town to visit the magnificent Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, commonly known as Songzanlin Monastery. From a distance, its imposing structure, built into the mountainside, is awe-inspiring. Be prepared to climb a long flight of steps—it's part of the pilgrimage experience and offers fantastic photo opportunities. Modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, the monastery is a vast complex of prayer halls, chapels, monks' quarters, and learning institutes. Visit the two main monastic colleges, Zhacang and Jikang. Inside, find towering golden Buddhas, intricate thangka paintings (religious scrolls), endless rows of scriptures, and the serene, spiritual atmosphere filled with the scent of butter lamps and the murmur of prayers. Observe the monks going about their daily routines—debating scriptures in the courtyard, chanting in the halls, or simply walking through the corridors. It's a living, breathing center of faith. Join the locals in walking the circular path around the monastery, spinning prayer wheels as you go—a deeply meditative and authentic experience.
