ローカルのボロング氏が、グリーンシータートルとカレッタカレッタ（ロウガミカメ）の保護を支援するために、自らカメの保護区をギリメノに設立しました。これらのカメはギリ諸島の水域に生息しており、ワレス線沿いで見つけることができます。この地点は、インド洋と太平洋が合流する地点です。

保護区の目的は、カメの卵を天敵から守ることです。カメの繁殖プロセスは他のどの生物とも異なり、悲劇的なことに毎シーズン多くの新生児の死をもたらします。そのため、この保護区の役割は、新生児が守られた砂場で孵化できるようにし、新生後に完全に発達したら水に放すことです。また、けがをしたカメも回復するまで世話をします。

保護区は、来場者からの寄付で運営され、そのお金に頼って、新生児のカメを健康に保ちます。2008年と2009年、1000匹以上のカメを保護して放流しました。寄付は、ギリメノの保護区で直接行うか、メールで寄付できます。
