Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary

Local man Bolong has set up his own turtle sanctuary on Gili Meno to help save the Green Sea Turtles and the Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead Turtles), which are common to the waters of the Gili Islands. These turtles can be found along the Wallace Line, which is the meeting point in which the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean combine.

The purpose of the sanctuary is to save turtle eggs from predators. The turtle breeding process is unlike any other, and tragically results in numerous newborn deaths each season. It is therefore the job of this sanctuary to safeguard newborns by allowing them to hatch in a protected sandpit. The baby turtles are then released into the water once they are fully developed. Any injured turtles are also cared for until they are well enough to be released into the sea.

The sanctuary survives on donations from visitors and relies on this money to keep baby turtles fit and healthy. During 2008 and 2009, it protected and released over 1000 turtles. Donations can be made directly at the sanctuary on Gili Meno or via email.
